Authors for Indies: Book City Bloor West, Toronto

Join me and a bunch of other others like Marissa Stapley and Plum Johnson at Book City Bloor West Village from 3:00 - 4:00 p.m. on Authors for Indies Day (Saturday, April 29, 2017), the annual event held at independent bookstores (indies) all across Canada.

On this day, Canadian authors show their appreciation for indie bookstores by volunteering as guest booksellers. AFI is a different sort of literary event -- it's a grassroots volunteer-run campaign whose goal is to raise awareness of indie bookstores and how important they are: to our communities, our reading lives, and our cultural well-being.

Tell your friends, family, and colleagues about Authors for Indies Day. And come out to an independent bookstore to meet authors, join in some activities, celebrate, shop, and have fun.

WASHINGTON, DC: The Potter's House - Author Talks: Writers as cartographers of the self

The USA Moving Parts book tour has one stop!

Join Christine Fischer Guy and myself as we discuss our latest works, The Umbrella Mender and Moving Parts.

We will consider the idea: Writers as cartographers of the self. Border crossings: where are the boundaries of fiction? Unfamiliar landscapes give their characters the chance to map new territories of the self, a place to explore, reimagine and reconsider identity.

Authors for Indies

Authors for Indies Day (Saturday, April 30, 2016) is a day when authors show their appreciation for Canadian independent bookstores (indies). We do this by volunteering as guest booksellers for the day. When you visit an indie bookstore on AFI Day, you'll have the opportunity to meet local authors, chat with us booklover to booklover, and get book recommendations from us. Perhaps share your recommendations with us. You may buy a book or two, or just get to know your local bookstore better.

Authors are doing this to raise awareness of indie bookstores and how important they are to our communities, our reading lives, and our cultural well-being. It's a day to give some love to your local neighbourhood bookstore.

So save the date on your calendar. Tell your friends, family, and colleagues about Authors for Indies Day on April 30.

TORONTO: Draft Reading Series 11.3

Draft is a celebration of process.

Readers are invited to try something new … anything they’ve always wanted to try but have never had the opportunity.

This might involve simply reading new work, but it might also include writing in a genre they’re not known for, collaborating with another writer or someone from a different discipline, incorporating elements from the other arts, reading upside down … anything and everything.

Angie shook free from Riley’s grip. Riley pulled a dart from the corkboard behind her and flicked the plastic end with her finger, making a flapping noise. Angie lunged forward and closed her fist around the dart, around Riley’s hand. She leaned in and kissed Riley. A high school kiss. Truth or dare? Oh, if Sam could see her now. Riley suppressed a laugh. Her mouth mashed against Angie’s elastic band lips. Of all the kisses she’d had, this was the saddest; it was like kissing her own hand as a teenager, trying to get it right. She released the muscles in her jaw and thought of Vaquero, Doug, Ulrich, an effortless and impossible collection of kisses. Sam, too—effortless and impossible. Riley kissed back. It was repulsive and lustful, and as Angie backed off, a rival gang of competitive arm wrestlers entered the bar for last call.

The gang of women, dressed in costume, stood tall, inflated from a recent victory. They moved leisurely and confidently, like creatures of the night, panthers tracking prey. Raggedy Ann had red woolly braids and smoky eyes. There was a sexy prison matron in fishnet stockings and a tight navy dress tap- ping a billy club against her palm. Two Cher look-alikes and a peroxide blonde Cinderella in clear plastic clogs crowded around a table. They sat down and gave each other high fives as Raggedy Ann approached the bar.
